The Austin Police Association voted early Thursday to approve a new police contract.  Police officers in Austin have been working with a contract in nearly a year.

The four-year, $44.6-million contract will allow officers to receive a 1{facfe2172b04f299937824a9c1283369198151460b73c952acd056710c9bd5ea} pay raise during the first year and a 2{facfe2172b04f299937824a9c1283369198151460b73c952acd056710c9bd5ea} raise in each of the remaining three years.  The contract also reinstates stipend pay for mental health officers, bilingual officers, field training officers, and officers who work specific shifts, including overnight.

Austin City Councilmember Ellen Troxclair, who was not in favor of the original December proposal, tells KLBJ she’s very pleased with this new agreement between the union and the city.  In the coming weeks, Troxclair will be introducing a new resolution that will set a goal to hire even more police officers over the next four years.

“So that not only are our current officers compensated properly, but, going forward, we have enough officers to keep up with our growing city,” said Troxclair.

The Austin City Council will vote on the new contract Thursday afternoon.
