City Council passes Homestead Exemption resolution

Council member Ellen Troxclair wins narrow approval for a slight property tax relief in Austin.  The homestead exemption for property owners has been bumped up to 10-percent, which she says is imporant because property values continue to climb along with the cost of living. The approval basically means the city portion of your property taxes will now see a 10-percent discount.

Though this was not nearly unanimous.  Opponents say the savings wouldn’t be significant enough, and others say it cuts into the city’s ability to increase the senior exemption.
