Austin's Police department is more than half way through the rape kit back log.

APD Forensics Director Dr. Dana Kadavy says this has taken months of work with DPS and at least three commercial companies to work through. Despite what you may see on TV, she says processing DNA evidence is a time consuming process. "We're consistently seeing turnaround times of 60 days being fairly standard. And then, when there's a rush due to a public safety concern, we're seeing cases turned around in a week or less." Kadavy expects that back log to be completely cleared out by this september.
