Dockless scooter crashes prompt new rules

Dockless electric scooters on the sidewalk

An Austin ordinance governing dockless scooters is inching closer to reality:
According to a Mobility Committee report, there were only 14 reported scooter crashes in the month of October, however, because this data comes solely from Austin Emergency Medical Services, the number may be higher.  Nine of those crashes involved injuries while five involved property damage.  As scooters continue to far outpace bicycles, the new ordinance being crafted will put a big focus on the liability of not only scooter companies, but also on the riders themselves.  It will also  set maximum speeds and proper dismount zones.  The ordinance should be ready to go before council by March.
