The verdict is in. Meechail Criner is guilty in the capital murder of University of Texas dance student Haruka Weiser in 2016.Meechail Criner is found guilty of capital murder in the sexual assault and death of UT Freshman student Haruka Weiser in 2016. The Travis County jury returned the guilty verdict today after nearly two weeks of testimony and almost four hours of closing arguments.
After the verdict was read an emotional Doctor Thomas Weiser, Haruka’s father took the stand and told his daughter’s killer, “you brutally raped her and then you mercilessly killed her. And I can see that the truth of that means nothing to you.”Criner sat emotionless as the verdict and victim impact was made. Criner is spared the death penalty because he was a minor at the time of the crime. He gets an automatic life sentence and Weiser pledges to keep him from getting paroled.
