With the opening of the Austin-Travis County Sobriety Center on the horizon, the Austin Police Department is hoping it will give them a lot more time to patrol the streets, especially during the busy weekends.  Assistant Chief Justin Newsom says it should also be a big assist for dealing with drunken homeless people

Newsom says they're typically always short-staffed downtown as it as, so when it comes to your average drunken bar patron on any given Saturday night, instead of a couple of officers spending 3 hours booking him or her into jail, they'll just take him to the sobriety center and be back on patrol a short time later.
