‘STEP’ Program Boosts Pflugerville Traffic Enforcement

Throughout the month of December, the Pflugerville Police Department conducted a heightened traffic enforcement initiative to encourage use of seatbelts and discourage impaired driving, distracted driving, and other unsafe driving practices.

This initiative is part of the Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) Selective Traffic Enforcement Programs (STEP) grant, which funds proactive traffic enforcement. Last year, the Pflugerville Police Department received $12,000 from the STEP grant that is now being invested into education and enforcement to make Pflugerville streets safer.

In the month of December, Pflugerville Police made 862 traffic stops. Twenty-five of these stops, or 2.9{15c2ce8669a1ed2f74ebf6ef168f05679f17d95790f1cbb6a225857870a08390}, were made because of the extra funding the STEP grant provides. These stops resulted in citations or warnings for seat belt violations, speed violations, intersection traffic control violations and hazardous moving violations. Each one of these traffic stops represents an opportunity for education and one less potential traffic accident or fatality.

While the Pflugerville Police Department participates with other local cities to increase enforcement during the holidays, the STEP grant funds traffic safety efforts all year-long. The next STEP enforcement initiative will take place over Spring Break.
