Trash bins may be permanent fixtures around homeless camps

As homeless continues to pose a major problem for the city of Austin, who didn’t want to be responsible for cleaning underpass homeless camps, but this year TxDOT passed that responsibility on to the city, which is now reluctantly spending $1.5-million on dozens of cleanups.

Interim homeless coordinator Veronica Briseno said there has been serious discussion about adding trash cans or dumpsters to those areas and they’re looking at whether there would be any barriers to making that a reality.

If approved, these receptacles could range anywhere from small cans to full-sized dumpsters.  Some on the council also want extra recycling bins added as well.
