UPDATE: ATF says Iconic Village Fire was intentional

Iconic Village Apartment fire

UPDATE:

ATF Special Agent Fred Milanewski said based on extensive testing in the four months since a fire at the Iconic Village Apartment killed five people, this was not an accident and this is now a criminal investigation. The ATF has offered a $10,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest.

ORIGINAL:

On July 20, a massive fire tore through the Iconic Village Apartments in San Marcos, leading to five deaths and the displacement of numerous residents.

In the wake of the fire, the cause was believed to have been due to negligence on the part of the complex’s owners and managers, as well as antiquated fire suppression systems.  On Thursday, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives hinted of a potentially more nefarious cause: arson.

Friday morning, officials with the ATF and the City of San Marcos will hold a briefing to deliver the findings of the fire investigation.  In a released statement, the ATF also says it will be announcing a reward for any help that leads them to the person(s) responsible for the fire.

No other information was given.
