Activists say Cap remap left some behind

Families and activists in Southeast Austin are demanding Capital metro return a few bus routes to the way they were before Cap Remap. Area PTA Vice President Ofelia Zapata says those buses were the only way some students could get to school. The transit agency says those students can still use Cap Metro Link, its program through Ride Austin.

But Eastside Memorial High School PTSA’s Ofelia Zapata said that’s not good enough.  Zapata is calling on Cap Metro to restart bus services for the area’s around her school and those near Allison Elementary as well.

Capital Metro officials said Cap Remap, which was a massive change up of bus routes last year, has created more reliable and frequent service for more than 98-percent of riders.

This came after activists and Southeast Austin parents say the rerouting left some kids without safe bus service to their schools. The activists also called for an investigation hoping to discover if this has put an undue burden on minorities or the poor.

The bus service says the Federal Transit Administration has already looked over Cap Remap and found across the entire system it has improved services for those specific groups.
