Rodriguez files gun safety bills

If one Austin lawmaker has his way you could get a citation or worse for not reporting your firearms as missing or stolen.

State Representative Eddie Rodriguez filed HB1207 that would require owners to report any lost or stolen firearms within five days of noticing they’re missing or face a class C misdemeanor. “It’s very similar to what Gov. Abbott was proposing, when he suggested in his May 30th last year School Firearms Safety Action Plan.”

Rodriguez says his bill has the blessing of cops. “It was written with input from the law enforcement community to make sure it helps them. It doesn’t infringe on rights of individuals and make their job any more difficult than it already is.”

Rodriguez says getting the bill passed is a public safety issue. “It’s very clear that when a gun is lost or stolen, that gun is used for committing crimes.”

Rodriguez also filed a bill that would designate safe storage spaces for those who have to surrender their weapons and ammo for emergency protection or protective orders.
