Capitol Rally Planned for Sexual Assault Legislation

Advocates for sexual assault survivors will gather at the Capitol on Monday morning to highlight some of the more prominent legislation affecting the sexual assault community.

Representatives from the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault emphasized the slate of bills filed this session reflects a greater commitment to sexual assault survivors and programs than the community has seen in a long time.

“These bills and their respective authors have already set the tone for a legislative session that prioritizes survivors and sexual assault issues,” said Rose Luna, TAASA executive director.

Sen. Kirk Watson, D-Austin, will host the event. He filed a package of bills to prevent sexual assault and empower survivors.

TAASA said the proposed legislation reflects a multi-pronged effort to ensure fair and unbiased treatment of survivors, to strengthen criminal investigations, and to invest in the core support services provided by Texas’ 88 rape crisis centers. The nearly two dozen bills include proposals to: increase funding for rape crisis centers, and continue funding of rape kit testing, improve access to SANE (sexual assault nurse examiners) care in rural communities.

“The range of legislation filed to date indicates that this isn’t a single member or single political party effort but part of a broader movement,” Luna added. “Through these bills, the Texas Legislature has an opportunity to acknowledge the day-to-day work being done by allies and advocates on the ground and support a path to healing and justice for survivors.”

The morning’s speakers include representatives from the organizations and sexual assault survivors.
