Lawyers for the man convicted of killing a freshman UT student want a new trial

Meechaiel Criner was given an automatic life sentence for the 2016 murder of Haruka Weiser on the UT campus.  But his attorneys are calling the guilty verdict into question, citing a reported admission of a member of the jury who says he looked up the case on the Internet and also researched how best to reach a verdict while sitting on a jury.

So his attorney’s will file a motion tomorrow for a retrial, which means that if a judge decides to grant that motion, there is the possibility that Criner could eventually walk out of jail a free man.
