City of Austin attorneys are arguing today in favor of the mandatory paid sick leave ordinance, which is being challenged by several business groups who say it’s a violation of state law and is burdensome for small business owners. If the city is successful, Austin State Representative Paul Workman has said he will be ready to roll back the ordinance in the next legislative session. Workman said that when they reconvene on Jan. of 2019, they will be ready to undo what has been done.
The city and its supporters call forced paid sick leave a basic human right.
Other opponents say the ordinance is a violation of the Texas Minimum Wage Act.
