Communites continue to struggle to come to grips with a shooting at a synagogue in Poway, California. Authorities say John T. Earnest, 19, surrendered to police after bursting into Chabad of Poway, which is north of San Diego, on Saturday and opening fire with about 100 people inside, killing Lori Kayne, 60, and injuring Rabbi Yisroes Goldstein, Noya Dahan, 8, and Almog Peretz, 34.
Following the shooting, Austin mayor Steve Adler issued the following statement:
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured and killed and the synagogue community. We’re seeing this hate in too many places and it’s the same hate that drives racism, homophobia, and ethnic slurs, whether it invades churches, temples, or even a mosque in north Austin. We must do more than merely watch and be horrified — we must all join, speak and act to condemn. We must make sure we leave no place anywhere for hate or ambiguity.” – Mayor Adler
