Tax watchdogs are calling out Austin Mayor Steve Adler for attacking HB-2.
Adler has been consistently hammering the legislature saying the rollback rate proposed will only save homeowners a dollar a month. Travis County Taxpayers Union’s Roger Falk disagrees. “We’ve done the math on this based on the tax rate for AISD, Travis County and the City of Austin. It comes closer to $30 a month and not a dollar a month, so he’s misleading the public about that.”
Falk explains, “When you extract the discounting to the rollback rate that’s in House Bill 2 and you apply it against the taxing entities here in Austin and Travis County it comes to about $424 dollars a year or over $35 dollars a month.”
Falk calls Adler’s statement dishonest and specious. “And I think the bottom line is he just doesn’t want to have accountability to the public and explain his spending.” Falk says, like compound interest, tax rate increases live forever unless they’re rolled back or appraisals are deflated, neither of which are likely to happen.
