Arson Charge Filed in Austin Club Fire

UPDATE: The Austin Fire Department says Matthew James Caldwell, 36, has been charged with second-degree arson for allegedly setting fire to the Austin Club in the historic Millett Opera House building.  

Police say Caldwell was seen running away as they arrived, allegedly with bottles of liquor and matches in his hand.

The damage was limited to the third floor, almost all of which was caused by smoke and water from the sprinklers.  It’s estimated the fire caused $100,000 in damages.

Austin Fire Department crews are working to remove smoke and water from the historic Austin Club on 9th Street after getting reports of a fire on the third floor.  According to AFD, sprinklers put out the fire.

It’s believed the fire was intentionall set and Austin police say one person has been taken into custody.
