Austin’s homeless population expected to rise

Early estimations show there are now more homeless people living on Austin streets than last year.

The total number counted last year was 2147, and while the official tally is not in yet from ECHO, or the Ending Community Homelessness Coalition, it’s projected that about 100 more people were counted this year.  ECHO Executive Director Ann Howard says the issue could also be tied to people re-entering homelessness after receiving support services previously, she said ECHO would love to keep people in their programs longer to ensure those people and families have solid enough footing to keep from becoming homeless again.
