Cite-and-release Marijauna policy is spreading in Williamson County

The bill that de-criminalizes small amounts of weed stays stuck in the Texas Senate meanwhile a cite-and-release policy spreading in Williamson County.

Even though the pot de-criminalization bill passed the House Monday, some agencies in Williamson County have already adopted policies that give those caught with less than two ounces of cannabais a citation rather than an arrest. Williamson County Sheriff Robert Chody spoke to CBS Austin. “So I approached the County Attorney and he already had this in place with Round Rock and I told him we were interested in doing it.”

Chody says the citation just keeps the offender out of the overcrowded county jail but does not decriminalize possession. “We’re really trying to fight crime. I’m not advocating for or against marijuana legalization. I’d advocating for better use of our resources here in Williamson County.”

Cedar Park reportedly has a similar policy in place.
