Travis County Commissioners this week continued looking into setting up a public defenders office to take on some of the indigent defense burdens that the County has. Texas Fair Defense Project Executive Director Amanda Woog tells Commissioners it has a significant impact on the county’s budget, costing at least $12-million.

For comparison, the County and District Attorney’s offices cost the county of around $30-million. The County has until May 10 to apply for a grant to help pay for a new public defenders office.
