An AISD elementary school in South Austin is getting a teaching kitchen courtesy of a famous New Orleans Chef.
The Emeril Lagasse Foundation announced their third Emeril Lagasse Culinary Garden and Teaching Kitchen is coming to Cunningham Elementary School. In a video announcing the program he explains his reasoning. “When you see children connecting with seeds, soils, and now their products and what to do with those products; knowing how to cook it is so fulfilling to these young people.”
The foundation is announcing that Cunningham Elementary will receive a five-year grant to build a 1500 square foot teaching kitchen and enhance the school’s current gardening program. Emeril says he wants to pass on what he learned as child. “I learned the importance of the soil, how to harvest it the right way, but then how to cook it. A natural way of doing things from seed to soil to the table. I want to share that with young people.”
This teaching kitchen will be Emeril’s first in Texas. He already has one in Florida and in Louisiana. “The dream is building more of these edible gardens attached to teaching kitchens, combined together makes an incredible project.”
