A Travis County jury recently handed down a sentence a man for the murder of a transient woman two years ago. Alexander Holland will spend the next 55 years behind bars for the killing of Luz Munoz.

According to Travis County District Attorney Margaret Moore, on January 18, 2017, Munoz and her boyfriend were camped behind the old Marisco’s Grill at 1701 East Riverside Drive.  Holland reportedly approached them and demanded that Munoz return a cell phone he had loaned her.  That touched off an argument and a fist fight, with Holland eventually stomping and kicking Munoz multiple times in the head, causing her brain to swell severely. The head injuries required emergency surgery but Munoz never recovered, and her family removed life support 36 hours later.

The boyfriend testified at trial as well as a witness who had seen the assault taking place and pulled into the parking lot. The witness was able to identify Holland as he left the scene.  Holland also had Munoz’s blood on his shoe when he was arrested two days after the assault.

Assistant District Attorneys Matt Campbell and Brandy Gann, who prosecuted this case, stated, “We appreciate the hard work of the jury in evaluating the facts and reaching its decision. This case presented some difficult evidence that was challenging to hear and process, and we thank the jury for its diligence. We hope the family is able to find some peace and closure following this result.”
