Austin’s current land-use code has homeowners who are remodeling or adding on to their homes, pony up the same fees as developers pay.
For neighborhoods without sidewalks, Mayor Protem Delia Garza said that could mean a home owner would either have to build a length of it themselves or pay a city fee instead, if they intend to add on to their homes more than half of their home’s original square footage.
Garza previously advocated for a resolution called the Family Homestead innitiative which would take certain obligations or fees out of the equation for residents looking add square footage to their homes.
During code rewrite talks, Garza wanted to see an amendment made that would ease those requirements for homeowners.
