The City of Austin hopes a new fee imposed on dockless scooters can fund new parking infrastructure.
The 15-cent per trip, per scooter fee, imposed this week is something the Austin Transportation Department says is really needed to address the sheer number of scooters that hit the streets this year. The department’s Jason Redfern says, despite current efforts, they do clog up the right-of-way and sidewalks.
That 15-cent fee will not only be put toward more staff to focus specifically on scooter enforcement, but discussions are also being had on potential extra fines in the event those scooters obstruct sidewalks, bike lanes, bus stops, and private property.
