Some local artists are pleased with their sales numbers following Last weeks Rooster Teeth Expo, an annual event celebrating the local web media giant and its fanbase. The 2019 event held over July 4th weekend was estimated to attract tens of thousands of visitors to the Austin Convention Center, with some event volunteers and participants estimating around 65,000 rolling through.
For local artists, conventions can create a big windfall for the year, or help them increase visibility. Timothy Doyle with Nakatomi Inc said his company’s firt year hosting a booth at the event, they made $20,000 , “That’s South By numbers,” he exclaimed. But sail have been slipping since, this year they took in around $12,000. But he explains that away, “That first year we were there, we were one of the few venders that was actually selling something. So we had a captive audience.”
In the following years, Nakatomi Inc. continued to host a booth and other artists and booths started making RTX an annual stop for them. Michele Sontag who works for Rooster teeth in the day but started a side business a year ago, called Dere Club. She wanted to see if her business designing and selling selling Japanese cartoon themed shirts and stickers had legs, and used RTX 2019 in Austin as a testing grounds. “It went really well, I ended up almost tripling my goal…that I set for myself.”
