Governor Greg Abbott prioritized education and property taxes at the State of the State address. Austin Area State Rep. Celia Israel said she and the Governor may not be on the same page, but she’s happy they are reading the same book.
Israel believes like many in Texas, education will get fixed this session. However she’s already started to hear grumbles of a special session on a number of key items.
Israel hopes it won’t come to that, but added, she wont be settling for anything less than the best for Texas education.
Israel said Texas can’t pat itself on the back and not understand there are consequences for stepping out on school districts.
The main problem, said Israel, is the state stepped away from its education responsibilities. “We used to be a 50/50 partner with our public schools. Now [the State] is a 35{401edce51c08da8a4f34aa2bdb823e6f996c3e5545f03f68e79ce9ad827c5901} partner.”
