Staffing levels at APD impacting the overtime budget

With 110 positions still unstaffed at the Austin Police Department, officers are having to use more overtime.  Because of that, Assistant Chief Troy Gay said the department is blowing through its overtime budget faster than it should.

He claims APD is rarely budgeted the right amount of overtime and typically ends up with a $1-million to $2-million deficit each year.  Gay says response times are also beginning to suffer due to the shortage.
