The Texas House is debating a bill to regulate short-term rentals on the state level, and removing the ability for cities like Austin to create their own rules. Sharon Walker, who manages 50 STRs in Austin, said the city council is stifling small business growth, as well as the city’s current STR ordinance is a blatant violation of property rights.
But the city said the state’s proposal is too vague and would kill Austin’s ability to regulate noise, trash, and parking and is strongly opposed to state interference.
Austin will completely ban non-owner occupied STR’s by 2022.
