Uncertainty looms for Austin City bookstore

Austin’s ‘Recycle Reads’ program is on very shaky ground following another decision to postpone a vote on a joint sublease with Austin Creative Reuse.  Council member Alison Alter has a problem with the amount of space that would leave for Recycled Reads. “We were never told that the end goal was to end Recycled Reads as a standalone, whether it’s in that location or somewhere else.” Another vote is planned for March 7, but the program is on a month-to-month lease, meaning it could have to move from the Burnet Road location.  Critics have called for an end to the program, claiming the city-run used bookstore creates too much competition for the private sector.
