The man Austin police believe is to blame for his ex-boyfriend’s murder has fled the country. APD reports Juan Rendon, 20, is in Mexico after police accused him in the shooting death of Juan Zapata, 38. Officials say they are working on a provisional arrest warrant but note it’s a lengthy process involving multiple agencies.
Update:
Austin police are investigating the shooting death of a man found in the Onion Creek Greenbelt Sunday.
APD’s David Fugitt said Juan Eduardo Rendon, 20, is being charged with the murder of his old boyfriend, Juan Angel Zapata, 38. Fugitt said the couple’s relationship had soured over the last few weeks and Zapata locked the suspect out of their home. But one of the victim’s co-workers told police Zapata was picked up by Rendon the day before his body was found. Co-workers and family members also told investigators Rendon had threatened Zapata over their relationship before.
Fugitt said insight into the victim and suspect would help investigators piece together what happened.

One man was found dead on an Austin’s green belt after a bad breakup.
APD’s David Fugitt says Juan Angel Zapata, 38, was found shot dead near the Onion Creek green belt Sunday. Investigators suspect Zapata’s ex-boyfriend Juan Eduardo Rendon, 20, is responsible.
Fugitt said the two year relationship ended a few weeks back when Zapata locked Rendon out of their home.
Investigators found out, Zapata actually bought Rendon a gun early on in their relationship. But it is not known if that is the weapon used in the murder or not. Police are still looking for Rendon, he is considered armed and dangerous.
