Texans are on board with having sin taxes fund public education.
That’s according to the latest University of Texas/Texas Tribune poll of 1200 voters surveyed on the internet last month. Sixty percent support legalizing marijuana and taxing it. Almost that many people think increasing the alcoholic beverage tax is a good idea. Another mechanism to fund public schools that the poll showed support for, was to divert some oil and gas tax money away from the Rainy Day Fund and put it towards education. However, raising the fuel tax, raising sales taxes and a state income tax were all widely rejected.
