New taxes coming online

This year is the last holiday shopping season in which online retailers won’t have to collect a sales tax in Texas.

A ruling this summer from the U.S. Supreme Court closed a loophole of sorts, and in doing so ruled that states must collect an online tax, even in states where a company has no physical presence.  Kevin Lyons with the Texas Comptroller’s Office says they’ve been working with lawmakers on some new rules for this, one is adding a fee instead of a local tax rate. Or, rather, an even 8-cents on the dollar.  Lawmakers will discuss the new rules in January.
