Red Flag gun laws are not among the 19 recommendations coming from the Texas Senate Committee on School Violence. State Senator Royce West is a member of the committee. He said they didn’t see a need for more laws to make it easier to remove guns from those believed to be dangerous. Senator West is referring to current Family Violence and Mental Illness Protective Orders already on the books. The committee did recommend reviewing when firearms can be returned to those who are no longer a risk.
There are four basic areas of the Senate school safety report including tighter security on school entrances and exits, also increasing resources like police, school marshals, arming teachers. The Report also covers understanding of mental illness and the root causes of mass shootings also the controversial Gun related Red Flag laws.
Mark Lowery served in the Secret Service, protecting Presidents Reagan and H-W Bush. He now advises school districts all over Texas, on the Secret Service “SAFE SCHOOL INITIATIVE”… which focuses on detecting students who show warning signs, before an incident happens.
Lowery said more schools are looking into the program, which Governor Abbott addressed in recent school safety roundtables.
