Austin Police Oversight Releases 2024 Report

Austin Police Oversight, which was formerly known the Office of Police Oversight, is out with its 2024 overview

In 2024, APO forwarded 841 complaints to the APD, recommending that 159 be investigated. APD investigated all 159, resulting in 69 sustained complaints. Sustained external complaints grew nearly 400% compared to 14 in 2023.

125 officers were disciplined, 9 were the subject of external community complaints, and 116 were the subject of internal complaints. APO issued 21 disciplinary objections or recommendations.

Some notable highlights include:

  • The Complaints Division received 1,052 community contacts, resulting in 841 external complaints (813 involving APD officers).
  • The Policy & Research Division proposed twenty-six policy recommendations to APD’s General Orders, including expanded body-worn camera use, a standalone drone policy, appearance standards aligned with the CROWN Act, and enhanced oversight of off-duty officer conduct.
  • The Communications and Community Engagement Division hosted or participated in 50 public events or engagements to connect with community members.
