Texas Governor Greg Abbott is directing Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath to investigate student-led protests against immigration enforcement actions.
Students at multiple Central Texas schools, including several within the Austin Independent School District, organized walkouts during school hours on Friday. Videos have been circulating online, with many showing children being given escorts by school district police officers.
“The Austin ISD gets taxpayer dollars to teach the subjects required by the state, not to help students skip school to protest,” Abbott said. “Our schools are for educating our children, not political indoctrination. This is one of many reasons why AISD is losing so many students.”
In a letter to parents, AISD Superintendent Matias Segura said walkouts were not sponsored or endorsed by the school. Segura also said that any students who missed class or were late would be counted as absent or tardy.
