An Austin police officer involved in a confrontation on 6th street in 2025 has been indefinitely suspended.
Video began circulating back in October showing officer Andy Garcia punching James Rodriguez in the head. A lawsuit claims Rodriguez suffered a brain injury when he fell to the ground.
The suit also claims that Garcia gave no warning to Rodriguez before the punch, and that Rodriguez was simply standing nearby while officers were detaining two other people.
Back in January of 2026, Police Chief Lisa Davis recommended that Garcia be suspended indefinitely, and following an internal investigation into the incident, that is now the official punishment.
A civil lawsuit against Garcia is pending.
