The Texas Department of Transportation is asking Texans to weigh in on the future of one of the state’s busiest highways.
TxDOT has launched a statewide survey aimed at gathering public input on Interstate 35 as part of its long-term planning effort known as the I-35 Texas Corridor Study: A Path to 2050. The survey is open now through May 6.
Transportation officials say feedback from drivers, residents, and businesses will help guide future improvements along the corridor, which stretches from Laredo to the Texas-Oklahoma state line.
Often referred to as the “Main Street of Texas,” I-35 plays a major role in the state’s economy and daily life. Roughly half of Texas’ population lives and works along the corridor, which connects major cities, tourism destinations, military bases, and state parks.
The study focuses on addressing both current and future transportation challenges, including congestion, mobility, and safety. It also looks at ways to improve travel for all users and transportation modes, while supporting economic growth across urban, rural, and border regions.
“I-35 is one of the most important interstates for the state of Texas and our nation,” said TxDOT Transportation Planning and Programs Director Humberto “Tito” Gonzalez Jr. “This statewide survey is a great opportunity for the public to join TxDOT in helping shape its future.”
TxDOT says the feedback will be used alongside data analysis and stakeholder input to develop potential projects, policies, and strategies for the corridor over the next 25 years.
Officials are encouraging anyone who travels along I-35—or is impacted by it—to take part in the survey.
For Central Texas drivers, the timing of the survey comes as work is beginning on a massive overhaul of I-35 through Austin. The project, which includes lowering portions of the highway and adding lane capacity, is expected to bring years of construction and traffic disruptions through one of the most congested stretches of roadway in the state.
Transportation leaders say public input gathered now could help shape how similar projects are approached in the future, as population growth continues to put pressure on the I-35 corridor.
