New bill aims to raise age restriction on buying tabacco and e-cigs

Stopping teens from smoking is the goal of legislation filed at the Capitol

Raising the age to buy cigarettes and e-cigarettes to 21 is being debated at the State Capitol.

The bill has the support of Texas 21, a coalition of 75 public health groups.  Their spokesman Dr. John Carlo made his case for raising the age of purchasing cigarettes and e-cigarettes to 21, Carlo said that exposure to Tobacco and Nicotine at such a young age effects brain development and has a higher risk of nictoine dependence.

The State House bill was authored by Representative John Zerwas, a physician, he states that the bill is a sound fiscal move.  The legislation has support in the Senate as well.

The ill has bipartisan and bicameral support State Senator Joan Huffman authored the Senate version.
