Between Ted Cruz’ razor-thin victory over Beto O’Rourke last Fall and President Trump’s record unpopularity, State GOP officials worry that Texas could turn blue in 2020. Texas US Senator John Cornyn, who’s up for re-election, says he’s re-tooling his campaign staff. “As you may have seen I’ve already hired a new campaign manager, John Jackson, who was campaign manager for Greg Abbott’s successful campaign.”
Cornyn added, “We’ve also recruited Steve Ministeri, the former Chairman of the Republican Party of Texas, who’s been working at the White House two years to come back home to help with a unity effort; hopefully to get everybody on my side of the aisle on the same page.”
Cornyn says he’s heeding the lessons of the 2018 midterms and warns republicans not to become complacent, as democrats have shown they can fire up voters and get money. Cornyn notes Republicans lost suburban voters then. “And I think in part that’s because of the fact that we were hung up on the primary message rather than talking about things like education, healthcare and traffic; things that would appeal to a suburban audience.”
