AISD Delays Final Approval of Consolidation Plan for Blackshear, Oak Springs

The Austin Independent School District has hit pause on making a final decision about the future of Blackshear and Oak Springs Elementary schools as district leaders seek more community input on a proposed consolidation.

On Tuesday night, a number of families and community members attended a meeting to get clarity on where a consolidated campus would be located, and what that means for East Austin. In all, AISD officials said roughly 350 responses were submitted to surveys that were sent out to families at both schools.

Superintendent Matias Segura said enrollment at both schools is low — around 200 students each — and consolidating them makes good financial sense. But Segura also stressed to families that this not an easy decision for anyone involved.

Many people are critical of the consolidation proposal, citing the importance of both campuses to the community.

AISD officials will continue weighing the community feedback, and a final decision date has not been announced.
