Austin Police Department is still investigating a deadly crash near 7th Street and Red River early Tuesday, March 12, 2024. According to APD, officers responded to a crash involving a vehicle and two pedestrians shortly after 1:00 a.m. One of the victims was pronounced dead on scene, and the second was transported to a local hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries.
The vehicle did not remain on scene and continued traveling east on East 7th street.
As the investigation progressed, detectives identified the suspected driver as Tyrone Thompson. Thompson was involved in another crash on Tuesday morning in Travis County and was arrested on unrelated charges.
APD’s Vehicular Homicide Unit filed charges of Crash Involving Death for the incident that occurred in Downtown Austin.
The deceased victim is identified as Cody Jordon Shelton. The identity of the second victim is not known, but that person is still hospitalized in critical condition.
This incident is being investigated as Austin’s 13th fatal crash of 2024, resulting in 13 fatalities for the year. On the same date in 2023, 20 fatal crashes resulted in 20 fatalities.
