Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) experienced its fifth ground delay related to an ongoing U.S. federal government shutdown on Monday, November 3, 2025.
The ground delays are a result of staffing shortages among air traffic controllers, who are required to work without pay during the shutdown which began on October 1, 2025
The ground delays are primarily due to a shortage of air traffic controllers. Controllers are considered “essential” employees and must work without pay during the shutdown, which has led some to call in sick or seek other jobs, straining an already short-staffed system.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued multiple ground delay programs and ground stops for flights arriving at AUS to ensure safety with fewer staff. When these delays occur, it causes congestion in the terminal and long lines for travelers.
Travelers are advised to monitor the FAA’s website for flight updates and check with their airlines directly for the latest information
