After video began circulating of a dog being severely abused on the balcony of an Austin apartment complex, the Austin Police Department has made an arrest in the case.
John Kaschak is charged with Cruelty to Animals, a third-degree felony.
Austin police officers responded to an Animal Urgent call on Sunday, February 8 at the SEVEN Apartments, located at 615 West 7th Street. APD received multiple reports regarding videos circulating on social media that appeared to show a dog being physically abused. Officers were provided with videos recorded from a nearby unit that a man restraining a dog against a balcony railing and striking the animal.
APD’s Animal Cruelty Unit reviewed evidence, interviewed witnesses, and assessed the dog’s welfare. Based on the totality of the evidence collected, investigators were able to move forward with an arrest.
The dog, named Boone, has since been placed with Austin Animal Services for safekeeping, and will remain in their care pending the outcome of the case. According to reports, Boone is generally in good health, but he will not be available for adoption or foster placement until the case concludes.
Third-degree felony animal cruelty in Texas can lead to up to ten years in prison, as well as a $10,000 fine.
