Austin police have identified the three children who died in a deadly apartment fire earlier this month in South Austin.

The fire broke out shortly before 1 a.m. on March 11 at an apartment unit in the 2500 block of Burleson Road, according to the Austin Fire Department. When firefighters arrived, flames were visible from the unit and crews began searching the residence while working to contain the fire.

Inside the apartment, firefighters found three children who had died in the blaze.

On Tuesday, the Austin Police Department identified the victims as 10-year-old Aniyah Lucero, 7-year-old Athena Lucero, and 5-year-old Jeremy Lucero, all siblings.

Three other people — a child and two adults — were able to escape the apartment but suffered serious burn injuries. They were taken to a hospital burn unit for treatment.

The fire was contained to a single apartment unit, but residents from roughly 30 nearby units were displaced as a result of the incident.

Investigators from the Austin Fire Department and federal authorities examined the scene, but officials say there is currently not enough evidence to determine the exact cause of the fire. Authorities also said there is no indication the fire was criminal in nature.

The investigation remains ongoing
