The Rosedale School is one of five AISD campuses that did not meet the state standard in this year’s accountability rankings, but Rosedale is unique in that it’s a school for special needs kids. Director of Accountability Debra Ready said they’re appealing the rating because it’s based on only six students.
Rosedale has around 130 students enrolled. And it’s worth noting that last year, the school did receive a “met standard” rating from the TEA. AISD expects their appeal to be approved.
Mendez Middle School is also one if the five schools in AISD that did not meet the minimum state standards last year. It marks the fifth consecutive year Mendez has failed. Education Austin President Ken Zarifis says more money is a big part of the solution, but it has to be spent in the right way.
Education Austin president Ken Zarifis says there’s no easy fix, but he feels spending more money would go a long way. AISD will spend more than $13,000 per student at Mendez this year — more than almost any other campus. Zarifis says money is needed to create a more exciting, engaging learning environment for kids in low-performing schools.
