Austin’s major League Soccer team now has a name, from Columbus Crew to Austin FC. At a gathering of MLS supporters hundreds cheered during the announcement, among them the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s Vanessa Fuentes, who exclaimed her excitement about what this would mean not just for area businesses but for the large area’s Latin population.
But even as she celebrated the franchise’s development, Fuentes was worried about Travis County’s challenge against the team’s tax-exempt stadium. She wondered if the county’s actions would be set up to cripple the MLS franchise before it even gets off the ground.
However, for others like local lawyer Jamal Alsaffar… not so much. He believes the county is merely reserving one of its rights, rather than swiftly acting upon them.
In the meantime he along with many celebrate, believing in the promise of community the team could instill. Alsaffar also a youth soccer coach says he’s already seen the benefits of MLS coming to Austin in his team has started working harder out on the practice field with the mere thought of MLS coming to there are, sparking dreams of a future in the sport and more.
