Capital Metro’s police chief provided an update to the agency’s Board of Directors this week, highlighting ongoing efforts to improve safety across Austin’s bus and rail system.

Chief RenEarl Bowie told board members that CapMetro’s relatively new transit police force continues to expand its presence across the system, working alongside public safety ambassadors and community intervention specialists as part of a broader safety strategy.

The department is part of CapMetro’s “three-team” approach, which combines law enforcement, social services, and customer-focused staff to respond to a wide range of situations on buses, trains, and at transit facilities.

During the update, Bowie emphasized increased visibility of officers and faster response times as key priorities, as the agency works to address rider concerns and build confidence in public transit.

CapMetro’s in-house police department only recently became fully operational, with officers certified and deployed in 2025 following years of planning.

Officials say the goal is to provide a consistent law enforcement presence tailored specifically to the transit environment.

The update comes amid ongoing concerns about safety on CapMetro vehicles.

In recent weeks, several violent incidents have drawn attention, including a stabbing earlier this month on a bus in South Austin that left multiple people injured.

Earlier this year, CapMetro also addressed safety measures following multiple stabbings on buses within a short period of time, prompting calls for increased security and enforcement.

Transit officials say they are continuing to invest in safety tools, including expanded surveillance systems and improved coordination between staff and law enforcement.

The agency says feedback from riders and board members will help shape future safety initiatives as ridership grows and service expands across Central Texas.
