As Austin enters day two of the citywide boil water notice, city officials are urging Austin Water customers to scale back their water usage.

According to a tweet from Austin Water, the city’s treatment plants can produce roughly 105-million gallons of water per day.  However, currently customers have been using 120-million gallons, which officials say is putting the reservoirs at critically low levels.

In order to prevent too much water being used, the utility is urging all customers to reduce their water consumption by 15-20{41b94ed60641855d30e715a04518d04419c2f56ef405d11541f9f93e1967c2b2} until further notice.

Calling it an “emergency situation,” the utility says customers should minimize all indoor use and avoid all outdoor use.

Some have speculated that the early morning call for a boil water notice on Monday sent people scrambling to their stoves to boil as much water as possible, spiking water usage and causing an unexpected problem for the city.

Bottled water has been difficult to find within almost all of the stores in and around Austin.
