Following Austin City Council’s work session on Tuesday, June 3rd, City Manager T.C. Broadnax issued a statement explaining that staff will withdraw the proposed extension of the City’s Automated License Plate Reader program from Thursday’s Council meeting. This decision means that the program will end effectively June 30, 2025.
Dozens of Austin residents showed up to Council to testify regarding ALPRs in Austin. Many of the speakers spoke against the use of ALPRs, citing concerns about personal privacy, threats to illegal aliens, threats to protesters, and more.
“Given concerns expressed today, I have decided to withdraw this item from the agenda at this time to provide more opportunities to address council members’ questions and do our due diligence to alleviate concerns prior to bringing this item back to City Council for consideration,” Broadnax said.
The Austin Police Department says the cameras have led to more than 200 arrests.
