The Austin Transportation Department flags another problem created by the rise of motorized scooter rentals, and that problem is people who hop onto these things while they’re drunk. Jason JonMichael with the transportation department said it’s compounded by people who don’t know what they’re doing.
So the department is working with Austin police to find a solution, but JonMichaels said the long arm of the law can only stretch so far, which is why he wants to see awareness campaigns.
Police do have the ability to make a drunk driving arrest for using these scooters while under the influence. APD and the transportation department will meet today to discuss the growing problem further.
